- Collage materials (magazines, printed text, fabric scraps)
- Needle and thread
- Found natural materials (leaves, sticks, lightweight objects)
- Glue, tape
- Digital drawing or layout tools
ROUTINE & EXPECTATIONS
- Students complete multiple journal entries throughout the month.
- Flags may be created during daily journal time or as longer weekly sessions.
- Emphasis is placed on experimentation, intention, and thoughtful design.
Suggested minimum: 4–6 flags or 1–2 fully developed flags.
REFLECTION
After each entry, students respond briefly:
- What intention or idea did you focus on?
- What symbols or materials did you choose and why?
- How does repetition or layering affect meaning?
Reflections may be written in the journal or submitted digitally.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is process-based.
Students are evaluated on:
- Completion of journal entries
- Thoughtful use of symbolism
- Willingness to experiment with materials
- Reflection and engagement
Technical skill or craftsmanship is not the primary focus.
DIFFERENTIATION & ACCESSIBILITY
- Allow students to work entirely on paper if materials are limited
- Provide symbol reference sheets if needed
- Offer a non-text-based option for students uncomfortable with written language
- Allow digital flag designs as an alternative
TEACHER NOTES
- Emphasize respect and intention rather than cultural imitation
- Encourage students to keep messages positive and reflective
- This unit pairs well with community-building and early-year routines
- Flags may be displayed together or kept private, depending on class culture
